After some web site under-the-covers changes I was checking access logs and noticed that 301 redirects never go away, they just get expanded.
Example: the site hosts an archive of messages from an email list that went away in 2013. Messages are still being referenced by “http://host.name/path/message.html%E2%80%9D in spite of 301 redirects to “https://www.host.name/path/message.html%E2%80%9D that have been in place a very long time.
I guess the redirects I just added do to some renames may never go away, either.
