A Boy Named Reply Guy Well my daddy left home when I was three He didn’t leave much for Ma and me just this old iPhone and the hereditary blues I don’t blame him ’cause he run and hid, but the worst damned thing that he left me with was his damned genes made me a reply guy too Well he musta must known Ma never cared She rarely answered and often glared and I shoulda known that was not the thing to do But some gal’d giggle at what I said but then one would attack and destroy my head I’ll tell ya, life ain’t easy for reply guys too Well I grew up weird and I grew up green and my mouth got faster and my brakes got thin and I roamed from site to site and north to south But I made a vow, to the Elder Gods Be true to yourself and damn the costs And say that’s me, I can’t control this mouth Well for my old dad, life had been tough He was old before he found some love his last wife liked his talk, I think, somehow So he give me this trait and he said goodbye Like him I’d have to shut up or try but it’s that trait I’m exercising now I got lucky, some things factored in I was old before I learned I’m him and I lived a life, I thought, of some success I think about him when I’m lookin’ back Every time I try and every time I crash When I can’t give anyone a “yes” When it’s all wrong but they’ve been told too much And when you can’t just STFU Life ain’t easy for reply guys too Shel Silverstien/Jeff 😘
