I've been on several years now. (4 years maybe since my Twitter flight? Time flies.)
I had also thought I remembered that one couldn't, but decided to try it anyway.
When it worked, to my surprise, that's why I thought to share it. Good to know that I probably wasn't just misremembering.

@CliftonR@wandering.shop Yeah, I'd started using Masto regularly around that time (though I'd signed up before that for some reason I forgot). It was def after the Great Twitter Migration that they added the ability to add or edit alt text after a toot was released. And as it goes with most software updates, some instances were quicker to install than others.
