I really, REALLY need my fellow white people to stop fetishizing HIPAA as a magic privacy law that will protect them from the government. It is NOT a privacy law. It does NOT protect your privacy. It is a law that GIVES OTHERS THE RIGHT TO YOUR CONFIDENTIAL MEDICAL DATA. It ONLY governs "covered entities" – meaning your medical treaters, your insurers, and their business partners – and it EXPRESSLY allows them to divulge to the state anything the state legally requires of them. And once any party that is NOT a Covered Entity gets their hands on your PHI, as far as HIPAA is concerned they can put it on a billboard. HIPAA is a FRAUD that was perpetrated on the American people to make them think their PHI was being protected when really what HIPAA was doing was making it so you had no legal grounds to object to business as usual in the healthcare sector.
