Why is it a ploy? They or rather their legal representatives were not allowed to say things that were 100% relevant and crucial to their defence so this was their only opportunity. Also it is really interesting that there is missing CCTV footage and the security guards and 'witness alpha' were not called to give evidence by the prosecution thus denying the defence to opportunity to cross-examine.
