at the risk of getting flamed, i'll say this: systemd isn't that bad nowadays. dbus isn't that bad either. monolithic? maybe. but they're also standardized entrypoints for whatever you want to do that more or less work, unlike the pile of shell scripts that came before it

  • @kit@sharkey.kitredgrave.net I agree, more or less, though I'm curious about whether you think they've meaningfully changed, or your impression of them has changed: to me, they've ~always been easier to manage than sysvinit and I never really understood the complaints. They've incrementally improved, but is there a specific thing that has made you feel better about them?

@kit@sharkey.kitredgrave.net generally good to use yeah, but worrying with how reliant things are on it, and with it embracing slop and fascist laws, i really wish there was an alternative to the systemd & freedesktop stack that's remotely as pleasant to use but far less fash-friendly

@kit@sharkey.kitredgrave.net we'd honestly be totally fine with systemd as a technology, it's only that that guy clearly views it as an instrument of personal power
