I think it's a holdover from other platforms where text was punished by the algorithm or where, as with Twitter, there wasn't sufficient length to post all the text. Plus it lets people use whatever font they want and colors and so forth. It makes things less accessible and breaks search so it isn't worth doing in my humble, but I think the above is the major reason why people continue to do it. Plus, unfortunately, it seems to do well, even on fedi.

@YouShallNotPass@chaosfem.tw Yeah, that's my point, how totally inaccessible it is. Esp on Instagram, where the "video" ends, and I get the "replay / next" options covering up what I am trying to read...

@YouShallNotPass@chaosfem.tw It also tends to get lost. Due to lack of alt-text, it doesn't get boosts. If it is tl;dr, I don't even look. I rarely get even close to a quarter of my character limit, even now 3yrs+ on mastodon.😜 @TonyaMarie@chaosfem.tw
