I doubt it was a staple in the 1600s. New Englanders barely knew how to feed themselves at that time. If so it certainly didn’t have the sugar and spices that it is now. Apple and Cheddar is a standard combo though. Cheddar was basically developed to go with Apples.

Seriously. What kind of pie-with-cheese are we talking here? …cheesecake? Or pizza pie? Quiche? Or something like banana-havarti? Pineapple-brie? I’m vegan and curious.
