I was reading about this last year. I think the key point is that most of the students trying for the prize have No knowledge of classics.They’re computer science students trying simply to identify letter shapes. So they aren’t finding Greek. They’re just finding sequences of letters. And the patterns they’re finding are completely backward viewable, so you can see the ‘crinkle’ pattern that the algorithm turns into a proposed ‘letter’. I was skeptical,but it seems very real.
