if one finds microplastics everywhere then there weren't any proper negative controls, until your friend's lab took care to get this sorted

I think they ultimately concluded there probably are microplastics everywhere, but some reports may have reported higher amounts of PE than are actually present due to misidentification of stearate salts. This is especially acute for the sizes of particles that can cross into cells and infiltrate biological tissues. Larger particles are more easily IDd
