Yes, a dot in the middle of the zero was a thought I had too, but I wonder whether that could too easily be confused with an 8, especially at small font sizes? It would be interesting to read a report on the reasons for the various decisions that were made.

But realistically nobody would be able to work with such small text (the original screenshot is 17x8 pixels in size:
