Regarding the second part, I think you’re reading a bit much into Elio’s position here. They’re very capable of writing a function like the one you proposed. They’re saying in R there’s a very nice, simple, built-in solution for this extremely common requirement. In Python there isn’t, and that sucks. It’s a bit more friction than they’d like.

@jimgar@hachyderm.io @bmaxv@noc.social I am trying to design a class on analysing climate model experiments for early university students who might not be super comfortable with python or any programming language at all. ANY extra cognitive load is a massive loss because it's time I need to waste not teaching them about climate model output and more friction between them and getting cool and motivating results.
