@billbennett@mastodon.nz I remember a feeling of awe the first time I looked at a submarine cable map of the world. I will be mad at the internet and mad at computers all day today (for unrelated reasons), but I do still appreciate the wonders of submarine cables.

@Kristie@mastodon.nz Here's the part I find mind-boggling: Before the pandemic I had to go to Singapore to visit one of the cable laying ships, spent a day on board. Amazingly they can carry enough cable to cross an ocean (maybe not NZ to the US, but certainly to an island halfway across) and the cable is normally only 1 or 2 meters either side of the intended route the whole way.
