@inthehands@hachyderm.io it may hit sooner than we think. I’m not sure about the current fertilizer reserves (considering growing corn for ethanol rather than for human consumption), but prices will go up more because of the shortage. Farmers going bankrupt and not planting because lack of fertilizer is something I hadn’t considered

@hasani@my-spaces.social There would be bailouts and backstops aplenty, but yeah…in truth, I don’t know how long the latency is between “fertilizer runs out” and “food runs out.” (I note for example in the article it mentions that the US produces 3/4 of the fertilizer it needs domestically.) I’d be really curious to hear somebody who know the food industry really think that through. Regardless, the point of my previous post is that long before the US hits a point of “food runs out,” we’ll see some serious financial / economic chaos.

@hasani@my-spaces.social @inthehands@hachyderm.io I've heard of lots of farmers planting more soybeans. Corn will be in short supply. Last month when a reporter tried to get fertilizer prices. nobody said they had any top sell. It left me with the impression many fertilizer sales places don't have enough fertilizer coming in to cover what they already agreed to supply.
