I've been reading a lot of sci-fi written by Adrian Tchaikovsky* lately and he uses a good amount of words that I need to look up, despite having read a fair lot of literature in English in the past 20 years.
My British partner couldn't tell me what it means, either, but he's not as much of a reader.
I'm just curious about how well known these sorts of words are!
*Tchaikovsky was born and educated in England, so British English is his native language. I'm mentioning this because it's relevant to the topic and because I didn't realise until I saw his bio in one of his books.

@asta@sunny.garden I have listened a book or two from Tchaikovsky, but I think words like this just got jumbled in my head and since the audio just keeps going, I didn’t register not understanding something. I have tried to read Children of time (or ruin or the third one), but I remember it being a bit too difficult for me from time to time.
