I joined Mastodon in 2018, mostly ignored it, and then have lightly and intermittently used it since one of the early Twitter debacles. I have accounts on a lot of instances. I reject the premise that each instance is its own social network with its own culture. When they're all connected together, with minimal friction for interacting with other instances, it makes it into one big social network, whether that's what people want or not. This isn't a value judgement — it's just my observation.
