@hydropsyche@ecoevo.social Added Darwin at the end. I looked into Mendel's work, but it wasn't very influential at the time and the results he published also appear to be questionable. In hindsight it was a very important book though, but I'm not sure if people are getting any wisdom from it now.

    @bert_hubert@fosstodon.org No, when it was published, it wasn't read much at all. But in the year 1900, DeVries, Correns and Tschermak all rediscovered his work while working on similar questions, and they all credited him in their foundational works. I read it in college, and it's beautiful and elegant in a way that few modern books are.
