Just read about a Canadian tech CEO who paid the Toronto Symphony Orchestra $400,000 so he could conduct them playing Mahler. Reports from the musicians seem to suggest that they were really not following him and were listening to each other. He had lots of talk about how it was his job to earn the musicians’ trust and how he spent months leading his own ensemble, rehearsing with the TSO, and watching videos of conductors, but it seems like not once did he consider taking a conducting lesson.
