@mmiasma@mastodon.sdf.org This is largely the API provider's fault. 40 years ago, the Mac added a trash can you can recover files from, so an erroneous delete is not catastrophic. Why does cloud infrastructure not work like that? It should not be possible to delete backups via an API.
For that matter, the old fashioned approach of putting tapes in a safe was much more secure.

@mike805@noc.social Human psychology being what it is I've learned two things about deleting data: - I always do a +delete to permanently delete files from my computer (even when I shouldn't or regret it when I have.) - I can count on one finger the number of times I've seen someone in a non-emergency situation, actually verify their backups were functioning correctly and their data was restorable. (It was me in December of 1999 😆 )
