Perhaps you're interrupting some existing drawing routine? Or you don't setup PPUCTRL properly to write horizontally.

i doubt it; the vertical writes could be caused by something setting that bit on $2000, but the actual code for that part looks correct (it works fine when using an fdskey on the same system) i feel like this isn't being caused by any of my code, but rather garbage data from the disk
