arma 2 -> dayz invents a new type of survival game -> mutation into last man standing game modes culminating in reference to the novel, "Battle Royale" -> fortnite, failing as a new school survival game (in the style of rust, itself a dayz derivative), adapts BR systems -> the coronavirus pandemic -> it is now today

you could go back in time and unplug dean hall's computer and come back home to an entirely different internet. its kind of hard to overstate the amount of influence his work ended up having, even though all he wanted to do with his notoriety is climb mt everest and then disappear forever
