I have a big-fricking "switch" but I use it to replace a bunch of small 8-port netgear trusty blue-GS1xx, because they don't make the equivalent in 1/2.5/5/10G yet. My routers are #illumos zones. I like smaller pieces for the same reasons of understanding & repairability. One of the @SystemsAppr@discuss.systems folks was a strong proponent of micro-protocols.
