@KlausGerdGiesen@chaos.social Not asking for an explanation. (At least not "for what to do". That's just complex, but not unclear. No reservation needed for my date.)
What I'd like to have a reasonable explanation for is how it's possible that a railway company in a centralized state like France is pushing this complexity on their customers, and can't make that reservation when booking the ticket.

Since the early 1980s four waves of so-called decentralisation laws have shaped a quite different set, and since 2003 Article 1 of the Constitution of the French Fifth Republic even states that "its organisation is decentralised". The growing complexity of the railway reservation system lies rather with SNCF which gets more and more bureaucratic in many fields - for instance also in refunding tickets for trains running late.
