There seems to be a certain critical mass where a society grows so large and complex that it is no longer possible to manage it through standard political control. The society forms a will of its own, and is driven by the naïve assumptions underpinning its political framework. A small set of parameters are selected, and optimized for, at the cost of everything else. Over time, society rots. Until the living standards disintegrate to the point where revolution is necessary for survival. Leaders are killed or exiled, and slowly the power vaccuum is filled by another paradigm. The cycle repeats.
