“Why don't the folk who live in the United States do something about their government?” You mean like when Little Turtle led Native confederated forces in the Northwest Indian War to resist U.S. territorial expansion? Or during the Great Sioux War of 1876, when Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho nations fought to defend the Black Hills? Or the long resistance of the Geronimo and the Chiricahua Apache against forced removal? Or the Red River War, the Nez Perce War, the occupation at Wounded Knee Occupation, the resistance at Standing Rock protests? ... ... Or the Wilmington Insurrection of 1898, when a multiracial government was overthrown by white supremacists, and Black citizens resisted and were massacred? Or the Watts Riots, the Detroit Riot, the Stonewall Riots? Or when Black Panther Party organized armed community patrols and survival programs? Or when Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta led farmworker strikes and boycotts? Or when Japanese Americans resisted incarceration during the Japanese American internment through draft resistance and legal challenges like Fred Korematsu? ... ... Or like when Daniel Shays led Shays’ Rebellion against debt enforcement and state taxation in the 1780s? Or when farmers rose up in the Whiskey Rebellion to resist federal excise taxes? Or when John Brown attempted to spark an armed slave revolt at Harpers Ferry? Or when labor organizers like Eugene V. Debs mobilized mass strikes during the Pullman Strike and helped build the American socialist movement? Or the Haymarket Affair, the Battle of Blair Mountain, and the broader coal wars, where largely white miners fought private armies and federal troops over labor conditions? Or when the Bonus Army marched on Washington demanding payment promised for wartime service? Or when groups like the Industrial Workers of the World, the Students for a Democratic Society, or later the Weather Underground organized direct action against war and state power? Or when students were shot during protests at Kent State University? …Or are you projecting a lack of resistance where there has never *stopped* being resistance, in order to soothe any guilt you're feeling about not being more resistant yourself?
