On the wording “These two envelopes …” I note that magnetic tape reels typically weigh 2 to 4 pounds each. So, that it took two of them, suggests about 8 pounds of physical mass. A bit big and heavy for what I would call an "envelope." A "small cardboard box" might be more typical.
And yes, magtape is typically described by its length — 300, 600, 1200 or 2400 feet long.
