A new hypothesis to explain the Cambrian 'explosion' suggests that continually increasing complexity of the biotic and abiotic environment put selective pressure on development of more complex sensory systems and central nervous systems, followed by more specialized and differentiated physiology, and ultimately, greater diversity of species.
