Can you use NFS instead?
I recently installed Netatalk on my NAS and switched from SMB back to AFP. But that's not a long-term solution, because macOS 27 is poised to drop AFP support.

@MrDOS@hachyderm.io I could, but it would be a lot more complicated to setup as samba set the permissions of the files properly to match the rest of the volume I think the manual once in a few days copy to a disk works better
