@tiotasram thanks for some ideas... Flett's are bcz they are decolonial in every way... there is no adult supremacy or didactic storytelling present. kids are never going to school or spending their time engaging in only typical kid norms in her stories. stories about showing how we are already otherwise by amplifying stories of mutuality and autonomy across age and species etc etc are some of the most powerful ways of making worlds and affirming kids experiences, this ofc includes showing some of the "darker" elements too.. *what shaun tan is brilliant at.. see Red Tree for example... im not saying it needs to be all nice, etc.

    @joyfulcarla in some ways the book I literally just read to my kids between making these posts ("The Skull" by John Klassen) qualifies, given a child character who has agency and deals in equal terms with an adult character. Not all of Klassen's work has those qualities though...
