From Steven Pinker Numerate public discourse. [...] So public concerns and policies are disproportionate to actual harms. People fear terrorist rampages and police shootings more than everyday violence, nuclear power more than particulate air pollution, pedestrian deaths from autonomous vehicles more than from massive SUVs and pickups. Public discourse should become more numerate, aided by journalism rooted in data, not just stories.
