Hashtags: On Mastodon, only hashtags can be searched, by design. You have to opt-in to being searched on each post. Use hashtags responsibly, ideally by putting them at the end of your toot.
Alt text: Please use alt text on your images. It's useful not just for accessibility, but for cases where a server's overloaded and people might not see your pic at all. It's not an enforced rule, but it's a strongly recommended best practice.

Tips for newbies, part 3 Remember that there's no algorithm here determining what you see and don't see. It's all down to who you follow and what they boost onto timelines, all presented in chronological order. Make liberal use of those like and boost buttons. Follow people with interesting things. Make new friends! Don't censor key words to try circumvent an algorithm or filters. Make sure your stuff is easy to find (or filter) and the community will appreciate it. #MastoTips

@KinkyKobolds ideally alt text should be very descriptive - imagine you're describing the picture to someone over the phone, if that helps... and if you know what a phone call is.
