@WhatACharmingHouse@mastodon.social how did you come to be thinking of Shirley Jackson and Tom Waits at the same time? Now I'm starting to wonder what a conversation between the two would be like. He would have to still be pretty young for this fictitious conversation to happen in real life, but Tom Waits and the ghost of Shirley Jackson talking seems kind of interesting to me.

@saposcat@indieauthors.social Funny. We were thinking the exact same thing when we tapped that out. They probably would have gotten along well. So, driving back and forth between houses, “Mule Variations” was on the car stereo a lot: ‘what’s he building in there …?’ And we’d been reading Shirley Jackson shorts, particularly “The Summer People.” As new neighbors, we thought how we were outsiders and objects of some speculation.
