10 years ago, i launched my zine press, Free the Future. it started with this zine about 70s hippie parenting. while designing the cover, i had some extra space at the bottom, and i thought "that's where the publisher name would be on a regular book"... the name "free the future" is a take-off on a @crimethinc slogan that i never agreed with: "eclipse the past, usurp the future." i liked the general direction, but i thought we should learn from the past so we can make the future better. i'd made a lot of zines before, but this idea of studying past subcultures was new, and i got excited about it-- so i ran with it. some titles were about the vibrant 70s grassroots political subculture in boston. others were about punk spaces, and underground DIY arts. i also did one about local italian-american mutual aid societies (incl. ones my ancestors were part of) i'm taking a little break lately, but there's more to come. i've gotten to collab with some great folks-- @alexxkittle , chris strunk, pat falco-- and it's been amazing i've also gotten a lot of support from friends (new and old)-- and am continually reminded of how supportive and wonderful the zine world is. bottom line: go write your own zines! #Zines #FreeTheFuturePress
