Now children, gather round Once upon a time, in land long forgotten, old people used to Save their Computer stuff on to old relics These old relics were called ‘Cassette Tapes’ Old people thought they were wonderful things You’d spend ages Loading a Cassette. Sitting in front of your Commodore PET, C64, C128, Atari ST, Sinclair ZX80 / 81, Amstrad 464, MSX When the Tape had fully run, you’d then be greeted with “Loading Error”. These were happy days

@avavsystems@mastodon.world I still use cassettes occasionally. I avoided them except for a colour test card program on a Spectrum and some testing software on a Jupiter Ace. They came out about a year before 8-Track (LearJet) in 1962, though there was a larger RCA version in 1958. Later Sony did the large Elcaset. The only redeeming feature is location memory, for audio books / books for the blind, where also the quality is adequate. Mainframes used 1/2" tape. Computer backup still uses tape in cartridges.

@avavsystems@mastodon.world I still remember that my ripped off copy of Way of the Exploding Fist had to have the volume set to 6.5 to load. (ZX+, and even a #SamCoupe )

@avavsystems@mastodon.world Yeah, it's most certainly a blessing, that hobbyist builders and programmers have been working hard at methods to adapt modern storage mediums to classic hardware. It's just that much more of a way to experience retro hardware without as many of its technical frustrations. It's even better if those modern adapters are aesthetically designed in retro hardware styles!
