I'm already getting replies of the form "But can't we use tech to fix this SOME way?" which while well intended is missing my bigger point. The issue is that people feel the existing tools are adequate and 'you only have to use them right' to make the problem go away. That is clearly wrong headed. There are people discussing ways to improve the fediverse (which I have no experience on so can't comment) Those will use tech, yes, but driven by a deeper more human understanding of the problem.

@scottjenson@social.coop tech seems to not solve our problems, but provide tools that we ourselves can use to solve (some of) our problems, no?

@scottjenson@social.coop We all know there is a contingent of people who are deeply and fundamentally convinced they belong to the genetically superior race and/or who enjoy being as vile as possible to those they perceive as deserving of it. I'm all for educating and changing minds where there is hope for it, but solving issues like the one you linked will also involve new tech solutions for walling off the abovementioned group more effectively.

@scottjenson@social.coop Just hearing about all this and then going to read the replies on DAIR itself has been so stressful for me. I can't imagine how tired and unhappy they must feel to always have to deal with this stuff. It sucks even worse to know that the Mastodon app is itself making the problem worse for them in a bunch of ways. You're right though, my mind always goes to "what feature could fix this" first. Totally unhelpful here.
