I'm a both sides person here. I grew up on those magazines (and Basic).
Anyway, this is from a book I've mentioned here before: The Creative Computer by Don Michie and Rory Johnston. Published in 1984 but relevant today.

@dpiponi after all of that, I should probably state that I wouldn't have picked up programming all those years ago (and even eventually get paid for it) if I hadn't had convenient computer access and the opportunity to make the same mistakes the pioneers once did, but on micros. So I would chalk this whole business up to Dijkstra being in a curmudgeonly mood. (cc. @peterb)
