"ThE kIdS aRe oUt oF CoNtrOl!" I'm doing research for a presentation and today found a table showing that in the 1990s, when i was last considered a youth, the youth crime rate in NZ was *five times* higher than it is today. Unfortunately, i don't think this awkward fact (and easily checked statistic) will stop the entirely constructed narrative of a youth crime wave being used to get votes in the election this year. The real question this raises for me is why aren't young people doing *more* crimes? #NZPol

@jdmcg@mastodon.nz They aren't gay enough? (Yes I know "be gay, do crime" dates back to when just being gay was the crime, but I couldn't help myself)

@jdmcg@mastodon.nz @janeishly@beige.party is it also possible that more crimes are going unreported? For example, the impression is that most in the UK would not bother to report non-violent crime unless they need to for insurance purposes, because everyone has broadly decided that nothing will be done, so why waste your time talking to the cops. I’m not saying they’re right, of course (given crime figures are how resources get allocated) but I can see why people end up thinking that way.
