@rogerparkinson We have never had a dishwasher and still manually wash/dry our dishes. We used to be assiduous in cleaning up at night when friends came over. Nowadays we are less so, if only because sometimes age and tiredness outweigh that feeling you are seeking a word for!

@paulh like you we've never had a dishwasher. My father was an early adopter of household gadgets so we got one when I was still a kid. I noticed that we went from everyone helping with the dishes to my mother spending at least as long stacking and rinsing. I don't know if there was a fault with the dishwasher or my mother but it made me hesitate to get one. However unlike you we've never been much good at getting them done the night before. It's usually next day.
