just had a thought that (practical) freedom of religion is a relatively recent development, actually by that, i don't just mean that the government won't persecute you for following the wrong religion (or not following one), but also that the process of doing so won't immediately break your entire social network like, it used to be the norm that the house of worship one went to was one of the primary venues in which people gathered together, and switching from one faith to another even in a tolerant society would, at best, unintentionally break those connections and, at worst, get you shunned but if any religion tries implementing that kind of mechanic in the 21st century, we (rightfully) call it a cult
