Hypothetically, if you are married and have a death on your side of extended family, is the spouse obligated to come to the memorial service or is it optional?

I dont think so BUT I do think it would be nice for spouse to come.

Depends on if the spouse actually met this dead person and if they were close to their husband/wife.
