@amerpie Back in the late 80s/early 90s one of my co-workers found a letter in Nature by someone who had conducted a casual experiment based on an article that said squirrels prefer food with the highest calorie content and the softest shell. The letter-writer determined that peanut M&Ms were the preferred food of their local squirrels. My co-worker was mad for months about this guy feeding M&Ms to squirrels.

@mjibrower Squirrels sound like they use the same logic as long-distance hikers. I walked from Georgia to Maine on honey buns, Nutella, Snickers and gas station jars of peanut butter. I never had to fight off any squirrels but mice were a constant problem in the shelters where we sometimes slept. They eat more hiker supplies every year than all the black bears on the east coast combined.
