I loved coding because it put everyone on an even playing field - our ability to write great apps was down to our experience and creativity… Bar the App Store fee to get published.
Looking around, it’s increasingly feeling like my ability to compete is just down to whether I have enough disposable income to pay for Claude on top, as an effort multiplier, and that, on reflection… Just makes me want out.
I’ll probably stick with it. It’s a hobby, but… It just kinda sucks to feel it’s pay-to-win.

Counterpoint: Coding languages are based on English, and localisation has never caught on to my knowledge. It’s never been an even playing field, and I’m just privileged to be a native English speaker. There’s probably going to be more international competition in the long-term, when the subscription market for these tools collapses, and maybe that’s a silver lining.
