@grmpyprogrammer popes are weird. like, all the conservative catholics yearn for another jp2, but he was actively opposed to the death penalty and even championed debt forgiveness by the imf; stuff they would call at least 'woke-adjacent' today. popes (at least recently) lean conservative or liberal on signature issues, but the church has a vast platform of positions, the majority of which are just dictated by inertia and tradition, and they all tend to be pretty bad.
