hah, there is actually a Microsoft documentation page saying that this Explorer-integrated GAC view is outdated and shouldn't be used anymore. They removed it with .NET Framework 4, but apparently older versions might still install it.

So perhaps this view would show up even on Windows 11, if an appropriately old .NET Framework is installed! But clearly Microsoft won't care about breaking this particular user of the Explorer menu bar.

For anyone curious, an even older Microsoft documentation page describes how this view works. Based on the screenshots, it seems to be straight out of Windows 2000. And this view must have had a similar kind of breakage in the past already - the documentation mentions a custom toolbar button in this view, which is not visible on Windows 10.
