@eyesquash@mastodon.world @tpherndon@hachyderm.io It all has to do with the fact that what we now call "A" was just the lowest note in the system our current system grew out of, and early on, there was no such thing as sharps or flats at all, or the concept of keys/modes as we know them. As stuff got added, that's essentially just how it worked out. I think the "middle C" thing is also related to C being the reference point between the bass and treble staffs in notation.
