@matthiasott @Wilto I was going to call this bear slander… black bears are chill, majestic, and generally mind their business (berries)… but I did get stalked by one last summer and interacted with it in much the same way as I would any android device (shouting “hey [google|bear]!”, banging my cook pot, and chucking rocks at it)

@matthiasott @Wilto It should hopefully be apparent that moving cost to the end-user is rapidly becoming the "keep the bubble inflating at all cost" strategy right now because those data-centres aren't looking so sure now... Remember when Norton installed a cryptominer? Good times.

@matthiasott @Wilto The most insane entitled-google-privilege BS to me is this bit: "Gemini Nano is on your device if you’re using Chrome, and it will be again if you remove it, unless you start tearing out wires in ways that the average user of the web can’t. So, in short: you now have an LLM running on your machine, and any website you visit can make use of it, and whatever processing resources it requires."

@matthiasott @Wilto The difference being that I can carry bear spray on hikes. Though I’ve fortunately never had to reach for it - most black bears are pretty content to ignore humans and just keep chowing down on berries. I’d rather deal with them than AI.

@matthiasott @Wilto I prefer the LLMs I run on my own machine to be under my control. I use GPT4All to run open source LLMs, and I don't allow them to access anything but a bunch of text files needed for whatever I want the LLM to do, copying it into a directory specifically for the task. In fact, I only use GPT4All once in a blue moon. I don't mind having some 70GB of various smallish LLMs on my hard drive, as long as I can decide what to do with them.
