@toxi As an academic, I have seen many (and participated in some) cases of FLOSS projects originating in academia enthusiastically welcoming corporate involvement. It was welcomed as the recognition for work that academia itself was not yet ready yet to recognize.
I have seen other cases where corporate participation was welcomed because governments and research funders encouraged academics to collaborate with industry.

@toxi Today, I see public research culture, quite similar in spirit to early FLOSS culture, evaporate in much the same way, for similar reasons.
