The raspberrypi was originally marketed as a linux pc, and that's why it had full size usb A ports, Ethernet, hdmi etc. so you could connect mouse, keyboard, a monitor and network. People eventually figured it's very useful as a board to make other things like IoT, robots and other hobby (and professional) projects.
