This was amplified to extreme levels by governments led by Prime Minister John Howard. First with facilities in far-flung arid areas. Later, to circumvent constitutional concerns, they made deals with neighboring islands to house immigrants, even refugees, indefinitely. The US, the UK, and Australia have two important things in common. A vestigal colonial ethos and a rabidly right wing media empire called News Corporation, cheering on the cruelty.
