A project I've wanted to do for ages, but never had the time and energy to sit down and figure it out is to put a raspberry Pi or similar with WiFi, GPS and cell/mobile into a collar and use it as war walking rig: log down WiFi and cell/mobile masts, their broadcast data points and inferred location. Maybe put RFIDs into the tags. I don't know what I'd put on the collars tags, as it should be whenever ones owner is, but I'm a stray. I guess just a link to the project page or something.
